Michael Szerbaty joined in 1985, and his contributions quickly became integral to the firm’s evolution. Rising from associate in 1991 to partner by 2000, Szerbaty played a key role in guiding the company through significant transitions. Following the untimely passing of the founding partners in 2003, he assumed leadership and steered the transformation of the firm, renamed MDSzerbaty Associates Architecture. Michael Freedman, who joined the firm in 2000 and became partner in 2014, now serves as Principal and Design Director. Reflecting on the firm’s enduring commitment to excellence, Freedman says, “Our goal has always been to exceed expectations, and our clients have come to rely on us for our ability to consistently deliver.” Spanning over 40 years, MDSA’s portfolio is as diverse as it is expansive. The firm’s expertise in higher education has led to collaborations with prestigious institutions such as Cornell University, Penn State, Vassar College, University at Buffalo, and the SUNY College of Optometry. In addition, their work for numerous New York City agencies— including the NYC School Construction Authority (SCA), the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA), and the Department of Design and Construction (DDC)—underscores their strong reputation in public sector projects. As Freedman explains, “We work closely with school staff, administrators, and community members to ensure that every design truly serves the needs of the end users.” Among its current projects, MDSA is undertaking a 2,400-square-foot biomolecular laboratory renovation for a higher education client, a 120,000-square-foot assisted living facility that is presently under planning board review, and Mosaic Pre-K Center Team (from left to right): Michael Szerbaty, Michael Freedman, Melissa Makowski, Jason Campagna APRIL 2025
